Care & Use

How do I separate the INNER PRESS from the OUTER [RE]FILL?

Place one hand on the OUTER [RE]FILL and another on the INNER PRESS then rotate while pulling apart. A twisting motion helps facilitate separation.

A second technique is to grab the OUTER with one hand and the Loop Cap with two fingers and pull.

Pro-tip - Still can’t separate them? Place the bottle on the ground and grip with the soles of your shoes, then pull up steadily.

How does [ONE PRESS] work?

Fill the OUTER [RE]FILL at selected source. Make sure NOT to fill past the indicated fill line. Place the OUTER on the ground or no higher than knee-height. Utilizing your body weight for mechanical advantage, press the INNER PURIFIER PRESS with steady downward force.

Pro Tip – Air must escape out the top as you press. Ensure the lid is removed or slightly ajar and avoid "cupping" the palm of your hands over the top of the INNER PRESS so air can escape.

How do I remove and/or install a Replacement Purifier Cartridge?

Removal.Locate purifier lock tab at bottom of INNER PRESS. Pull out lock tab (with index finger), grab the cartridge with your other 4 fingers and twist cartridge off.

Installation. Insert cartridge into INNER PRESS and rotate counterclockwise. Screw cartridge until filter lock tab clicks into lock slot. Do not over tighten.

Before first use. Before drinking, press water through the system twice. Discolored water (caused by harmless activated carbon dust) is normal during the first few cycles.

Why do you recommend "pressing" either on the ground or on a flat surface below 20 inches (50 cm)?

Mechanical advantage, baby. No big muscles required. We always recommend pressing with steady downward force at a lower height (either on the ground or a level surface no more than 20 inches) so you can leverage your body weight. It's the fastest, most efficient, and easiest way to purify water on-the-go. If you want to test this technique, try from a lower surface and a higher surface (you'll feel the difference).

How long does the replaceable Purifier Cartridge last?

In optimum conditions, your Purifier Cartridge will last 300 uses (40 gal / 150 L). However, the lifespan of the purifier is dependent on the quality of your water source. High levels of sediment in the water will shorten the life span of the filter. As the cartridge nears end-of-life, the water flow rate slows. Once press time reaches 25 seconds, the cartridge should be replaced.

Does the Purifier cartridge make salt water safe to drink?

No. Salt water contains ions like magnesium and sodium that our filters are not effective against. To remove salt from ocean water, you need a desalinization filter. GRAYL’s Purifier is effective with virtually any fresh water source.

What should I do if my GRAYL freezes?

Freezing temperatures have no effect on a dry Purifier Cartridge. a wet cartridge is damaged by repeat freeze/thaw cycles, so it’s best to be avoided.

GRAYL conducted freeze/thaw tests in an independent lab to determine the effect of freezing your GRAYL. The Purifier Cartridge maintained performance after a single freeze/thaw cycle.

However, after three freeze/thaw cycles, the Purifier Cartridge suffered a drop in performance below acceptable levels. For safety, we recommend changing the Purifier Cartridge after a second freeze/thaw cycle.

What’s the shelf life Purifier Cartridge? How do I store between uses?

An unopened Replacement Purifier Cartridge lasts 10 years.

After first use, with proper care, your Purifier cartridges will last up to three years after opening. Disassemble your bottle, rinse the cartridge and allow to air-dry thoroughly (24-72 hours). Then store in an air-tight location between uses. Keep the Bottle in moderate temperatures and avoid long periods of direct sunlight.

Pro Tip – An assembled Purifier Bottle is a great place to store a cartridge between uses. Make sure all the parts are dry and the lid is sealed tight!

Can I put any GRAYL components in the microwave or freezer?

No.

Is the GRAYL dishwasher safe?

The OUTER [RE]FILL, INNER PRESS, and flip-locking lid are top rack dishwasher safe; otherwise wash by hand with warm, soapy water. Wash before first use.

Note: do not place filter cartridges in the dishwasher or in soapy water.

Can I use soap on a cartridge?

No. You may rinse the cartridge with clean water as needed.

Health and Safety

Are all GRAYL components BPA-free? EA-free?

Yes and yes!

Many types of plastics are questionable. That’s why GRAYL chose the safest plastic available Polypropylene #5 for the bottle material. PP#5 is both BPA-free and EA-free (it leaches no chemicals with Estrogenic Activity).

Other materials include:

- Lid and Cartridge - ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – BPA- and EA-free

- Food grade silicone - BPA- and EA-free

What type of purifier technology is used in Purifier cartridges?

GRAYL’s replaceable Purifier Cartridges uses an advanced purifier media with three technologies to provide full-spectrum against a wide range impurities:

- Non-woven ceramic base –The base does not capture pathogens (like older filters do). Instead, its purpose is to provide many strong, flexible layers to hold the other two technologies and keep out dirt and debris.

- Positively Charged Mesh – Embedded in the base is a positively charged mesh (think: a billion tiny magnets) that grab onto pathogens (bacteria, protozoa, virus) as they pass. Scientifically, the process is called ‘electroadhesion’. In practice, water flows really fast (2 L / minute) and the full range of germs are removed from the water.

- Activated Carbon – ‘Magic’ black powder that absorbs many chemicals, heavy metals, and foul flavors and odors. AC is embedded within the media, saving space and weight over two-stage filters.

What is the pore size (microns) of the Purifier Cartridge?

GRAYL utilizes electroadsorption to capture pathogens, not ‘pore size’.

Pore size is relevant in 'mechanical filters', which work by forcing water through tiny pores in a filter - the biggest pore must be smaller than the smallest germ. But small pore size means water flows slowly, so flow rate is generally slower in mechanical filters.

What is activated carbon?

Activated carbon absorbs waterborne impurities. Carbon has been used for thousands of years - the ancient Phoenicians (1200 BC) stored water in charred barrels for long sea voyages. Carbon is "activated" with heat and oxygen to create tiny pores, which increases the surface area. GRAYL's Purifier Media incorporates ultra-powdered activated carbon throughout the filter, creating an even higher surface area than in most filters. The carbon is made from natural coconut husks. Activated carbon's high surface area adsorbs a wide range of impurities commonly found in tap water, including various metals, organic molecules and industrial and pharmaceutical chemicals.

Is the Purified [+Filtered] water from GRAYL safe for drinking in the developing world?

Yes. In the developing world, water sources may be contaminated with bacteria, protozoa and virus. So you need a purifier like GRAYL that can remove all three pathogens.

What about Flint, Michigan? Water from industrial spills?

Beginning in 2014, Flint, USA was effected by a terrible accident that created very high lead levels in the drinking water. GRAYL is effective against lead… so, perfect, right? Not quite.

Industrial accidents like Flint, mine tailings, oil spills, etc can create very, very high levels of impurities in the water – well beyond the trace levels GRAYL is built to remove. Additionally, industrial spills may contain any of thousands of chemicals, many of which GRAYL has never tested.

We strongly recommend purifying water upstream of the spill, or finding other water sources.
